We've added a new jam to the mix! Make an Improv Song debuted on the local Improv Jam Billboard with great fanfare and good songs. Our resident musician and long time friend, Rohit, took us through the basics of understanding beats and rhythm before we opened up our voices by 'Na na, na na na Na, Na na na Na, Hey Jude'-ing. Goosebumps!

It's one thing to read out lyrics to a tune, and another to really perform them - think open arms, loud voices, and the rest of the room joining in on the chorus. In this session we made 4-line verses and a chorus on the spot, and learnt easy ways to perform them to an audience. It's all about rhyme, rhythm, and real conviction. Personally, I like talk-singing my way through things.

We've got another one coming soon, so keep an eye out for it on our WhatsApp Community. If you like musicals, bathroom singing, humming tunes, or even if words are your thing, this is a jam I can't recommend enough. Beginner-friendly, no music experience required, and no audience or performance pressure - all we'd like is your can-do attitude.

Next we had our murder mystery episode of The Silliest Show Tonight

Fri, 17th July.

The Silliest Show Tonight took a dramatic, murderous twist this evening. We were heading into a 'Whodunnit'/Murder-Mystery themed weekend at the Underline Center, so we hopped into our Mystery Machine and solved the murder of Peter.

Peter wore many hats; he was the guard of his own castle; owned a candy empire; had two estranged adult children; kept questionable company in the local tavernkeep and a torture master; and died under mysterious circumstances. Since the Police Commissioner, alongwith with his henchpeople Righty & Lefty, was unable to make any meaningful progress in the investigation, we saw the introduction of experienced private eye Noses, with her quick-witted sidekick, Poses. (I'm just glad we've ventured out of Ramesh & Suresh territory - IYKYK)

Our final suspects boiled down to: estranged adult child #1, Cassandra (who had had enough with the tacky decor of the house); estranged adult child #2, John (a failed actor); and, torture master Manjunath (inventor of a candy torture chair).

If you'd like to know whodidit, swing by one of our events and we'll tell you. Heh!

Listen, as first time improvised murder-mysteries go, this was a pretty neat one. Poses posed some difficult questions, and Noses sniffed out the culprit.

Last up we had an Character Narrative Intensive Course

We're running intensives for our cast members in July and August. In July, we're running an intensive on building character narratives - think how a character comes across, what they want from life, and how they interact with the other characters based on this information. We're 2 sessions in and we've worked on how an improviser might choose to move their character physically, and the things they can do to communicate personality and objectives through subtext. We also touched upon the powerful concept of Mantras, a Keith Johnstone favourite, that helps solidify a mindset for the character that informs the way they operate.

Give Mantras a go in your real life and see the difference. Repeat 'I know exactly what to do' in your mind through the day, and notice if there's a shift in the way you approach tasks and people during that period. I'd love to hear if you noticed a difference.

To be fair, I'd love to hear if it didn't make a difference, too.

Maybe we can chat about it at one of our events! See you around.
